A detailed history
is followed by a thorough physical examination, including
neurological tests, and X-rays may be called for if justified.
Diagnosis and underlying causes are sought in a methodical
manner before treatment can begin.
Osteopathic treatment consists of cranial osteopathic methods,
soft tissue techniques, articulation (passive stretching) and
specific adjustments of areas of malfunction or bone
mal-alignment.
Specific adjustments are only carried out when it is essential
to restore restricted mobility and proper functioning of a
joint. A detailed knowledge of the planes and angles of the
joints is essential to carry out these procedures safely and
effectively. The Osteopath must develop a highly sensitive sense
of touch and all manipulation must be adapted to the specific
needs of the patient’s tissues to which the technique is
applied.
